I know how difficult it is for a wandering heart and a mountain lover to be stuck at home without being able to go to the Mountains. Even though the situations don’t allow you to do what you love the most, below are some of the best movies/documentaries based on the mountains, tracing the stories and journeys of mountaineers, trekkers, and explorers. If not physically, you can at least feel the mountains virtually.
Here is a curated list of movies that I've personally loved and it's also available to watch for free online.
The story of Apa Sherpa. who climbed Mount Everest 21 times| Short Film
Sherpas are known as the heroes of Mount Everest. They fix your ropes and they carry your camping stuff. This short film is the story of Apa Sherpa who was miraculously found alive after being hit by an avalanche at the age of 3 months. He has climbed Mount Everest 21 times.
Into the wild
This is my favorite and chances are you must have already watched this movie but if you haven’t, this should be your next movie. It is the story of Christopher McCandless who abandons all his possessions and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wild. Every minute of this movie will keep you from blinking your eye. This movie takes you through the extraordinary experiences of backpacking and the hardships of some wrong decisions. This movie will also motivate you to do what you love and prioritize things in your life and with the beautiful end message “Happiness is real, Only when shared”.
Mountain is a documentary with some extraordinary clips from the peaks all around the world. The film focuses on the connection between humans and mountains. It’s a good 1hr 10 minutes watch to understand why we climb even though it’s not easy and people die during summits.
The Dawn Wall is a documentary on El Capitan's attempt by Tommy Cadwell and Kevin Jorgeson. For Tommy Cadwell it was more than just a climb after losing his index finger in an accident. The climbing duo spent 2 weeks on the wall and 6 years plotting and practicing their routes.
Touching the void is a book by Joe Simpson about his and Simpson Yates's climb to siula Grande in Peru and their disastrous encounters leading to a successful climb later filmed as a documentary.
Mountains of Storms
Mountain of storms is a documentary by 5 friends set out on a road trip in a Ford van to South America. They called themselves Fun Hogs and the group was made up of Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and The North Face’s co-founder Doug Tompkins, along with rock climber Chris Jones, U.S. ski/snowboard Hall of Famer Dick Dorworth, and Mountainfilm founder Lito Tejada-Flores.
The Snow Guardian
The snow guardian is a small 5 minute documentary on a man “Billy Barr” who lived in the woods for 40 years who loves cricket and Bollywood. You will love the journal he kept every winter.
