Multi-pitch routes and alpinism

You need to take a belay device that can be used with a double rope. To belay a second from above on multi-pitch route you need a device with a loop to clip it on a stance. These devices are more versatile but also heavier and more expensive.

Single rope belaying/Top roping

All belay devices can be used for single rope belaying or top roping. Petzl's Grigri is a specialised device with assisted braking.
