If your balance isn't very good, don't panic. There are all sorts of exercises you can do to become a master tightrope walker (or close enough).

Improving Your Balance in Everyday Life

It's easy to improve your balance without even noticing that you're doing it

Whenever you're on the bus or underground, for example, try standing up for the whole journey without clinging too tightly to a bar. This will give your leg muscles a good workout, as well as giving your fellow passengers a good laugh if you go flying.

At home, why not do certain everyday tasks standing on one foot

Brushing your teeth, doing the ironing, hanging up the laundry and doing your make-up (just make sure you don't draw a wonky line) are all great options

The only limit is your imagination!

Specific Exercises to Work on Your Balance

There are all sorts of exercises that are easy to do at home or at the gym to improve your sense of balance. Here are some example:

  • Doing squats: to have good balance, you need to have strong legs! By doing squats, you will build all of the muscles in your legs.
  • Balancing on one leg: simple yet effective. Make it harder by lifting your leg higher: lift your spare leg higher or for longer, depending on how good you are at it.
  • Use a bosu: this soft half-sphere is often used by physios and really puts your balance through its paces.

Sports that will Improve Your Balance

Whatever sport you do, you will always need good balance for the best performance.

However, certain sports are going to need more balance than others. Let's take a look at them.

  • Yoga and Pilates: these two disciplines are particularly well known and are great for stability. They will also strengthen your core muscles, which are essential for good balance.Horse riding: that's right! We tend to forget about it, but sitting on a horse is no mean feat and requires a decent amount of balance.
  • Roller skating: with a pair of wheels under your feet, everything becomes a bit wobbly! The better you get, the more impressive tricks you'll be able to do. And don't forget your helmet!
  • Surfing: standing barefoot on a board as you glide through the water. All we can say is, good luck.

With all that hard work, you'll have the best balance ever. Don't forget to send us your tips - we always love hearing from you!
