The French East India Company (founded in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert) formed one settlement in Surat in 1668 and another one in Pondicherry in 1674 (Now Puducherry). François Martin, the company's director, established Pondicherry as the capital of French posts. Mahe was established in 1725, Yanam in 1731, and Karaikal in 1739. French concerns flourished in Bengal, with Chandernagore (Chandannagar) serving as a focal point, particularly after 1730 under the direction of Joseph-François Dupleix, who was assigned general director in 1742.
Other than a couple of small posts (loges), the French facilities in India from 1763, which were under the jurisdiction of the king after the abolishment of the company in 1769, consisted of no more than five moderate-sized settlements: Chandernagore in Bengal, Yanam at the face of the Godavari River, Pondicherry and Karaikal on the Coromandel Coast, and Mahe on the Malabar Coast. The English domination of India reduced trade and commerce in French settlements. They were invaded by the English in 1778 and again in 1793, but were given back to France in 1816. They were given local government and recognition in the French parliament by the Second Republic of France. Commercial liberalism and Anglo-French understanding provided these settlements with a brief period of economic growth during France's Second Empire.
The loges were returned to independent India in 1947. In 1951, Chandernagore was eventually transferred. The remaining four French possessions were de facto transferred to the Union of India on November 1, 1954, and de jure transfer was finished on May 28, 1956. On August 16, 1962, the Instruments of ratification were signed, and Pondicherry, comprised of the four settlements, became a union territory. In 2006, the territory was officially renamed Puducherry.
