Here are a few simple tips to ensure your Merino wool products last as long as possible!
Prepare the following equipment:
- A washing machine
- Normal liquid detergent
Good news! You don't need any special products or equipment to wash your Merino wool garments.
If it makes you feel better, you can use a laundry bag for delicates, but as we'll see later, washing your woollen garment with coarser textiles also helps reduce pilling.
Machine wash your T-shirt, tights or other garments at 30° on a normal cycle. Why a normal cycle? Because traces of detergent may remain in the textile if washed on a gentle cycle. Why 30 degrees? because extreme variations in temperature can cause the wool to shrink. Why liquid detergent? Because it rinses better than powder detergents, without a doubt. You can use laundry bags to protect your garments when machine washing.
Dry flat. NEVER tumble dry unless you want to end up with a mini Merino wool T-shirt.
You've probably realised that the secret to Merino wool is keeping things simple! And for the ultimate in low-maintenance, you don't even need to iron your wool t-shirts. You run the risk of doing more harm than good and this way, you'll have more time for trekking!
