Should You Be Using Vibration Dampers?

You’ve seen them before; usually they’re little circles at the bottom of the face on some tennis racquets. Well, those little circles have a name: a vibration dampener. In today’s blog we’re going to take a look at what they are and why some tennis players use them on their racquet. Let’s not waste any time and get right into the swing of things (pun intended). What is a vibration dampener? First and foremost, let’s start with what it is. A vibration dampener is a small mechanism that’s made out of rubber and inserted into a string bed near the shoulders and the throat of the racquet.

Why Do Tennis Players Use Vibration Dampeners?

The main purpose of a vibration dampener is to reduce the amount of vibration that you feel when a tennis ball hits your strings. This might help you reduce fatigue if you’re involved in a long match. In turn, the vibration dampener reduces or in some cases eliminates the ping sound that you hear when the ball and your racquet makes contact. This sound is the bane of some tennis players’ existences, and that’s why they use a vibration dampener on their racquets. Essentially, they want to dull the ping and make the sound more solid and sharp. A vibration dampener will not … Contrary to popular belief, will not reduce the chances of developing injuries such as tennis elbow. Some people are under the assumption that the vibration dampener would reduce the amount of vibration and shock to a level that it would reduce a player’s chance of injury. While we wish that were the case, it simply is not.

Is A Vibration Dampener Right For Me?

The decision to use a vibration dampener is subjective. While it may work for one player, it may not for another. So, it’s all a matter of what’s right for you. For instance, if you don’t like the ping sound that we discussed before, maybe you should consider giving a vibration dampener a try. The best way to know if it’s for you is to test it out and see if you like it.

How To Use A Vibration Dampener

While it may seem like just a small rubber circle you stick on your racquet, the United States Tennis Association does have some rules on where you can place your dampener. The dampener must be placed on the outside of the cross strings, above the throat of the racquet, and be pushed up on the bottom or the outside of the cross string portion of your string bed.

So if you choose to use a vibration dampener it comes with a few benefits that can help your game. Don’t take our word for it, try it out and see if it’s right for you.
