Leather or PVC? With or without laces? There's a huge range of boots to choose from. Here are our tips on choosing the right model for you.
READ MORERiding boots aren't just for looks. They stop your legs rubbing against the saddle and keep them in place.
Boots are also good for safety: they limit the risk of getting your foot caught in a stirrup in the event of a fall thanks to their heel and grippy sole.
You should choose your boots based on 2 criteria: the weather conditions and your skill level. You can then refine your choice based on the material used: leather or synthetics.
For riding in extremely cold weather, you can opt for a pair of synthetic boots lined with a special thermal fabric.
You will also find boots that are specially designed to protect from the cold using a warm lining or a neoprene upper.
Alternatively, you could simply add a fleece liner to your normal pair of boots so that you've got extra protection from the cold, although it won't be quite as warm as a special lined boot.
BEGINNER - You are starting horse riding and need help with your riding and getting your horse ready during group or individual lessons.
For your safety, your riding boots come with a non-slip heel that won't slide around in the stirrup, and a sole with good grip.
Synthetic boots are very easy to look after and are completely watertight so that you can ride in damp or wet weather.
ADVANCED -You can get your horse ready by yourself, even if you still need help with your riding during group or individual lessons.
You are looking for good contact with your horse, so you need a fitted model. The boots in our range come in several calf sizes and have a wide elastic band to fit different body shapes.
EXPERT -You can get your horse ready by yourself and do not need help when riding. The supple leather will give you even more precise contact. The very thin leather under the laces is more comfortable in the saddle as there are no pressure points when you flex your feet. For intensive use, choose a model with a stitched sole, which is more weather-resistant than a glued or vulcanised sole.
There are two main types of boots depending on the material used:
Synthetic boots: these boots offer good value for money and are easy care, making them a great option to get you started. Because they are completely waterproof, they are perfect for use all year round.
Leather boots: these are ideal for advanced or expert riders as they give you good contact with your horse but need daily care.
Rubber boots do not come in different calf sizes, but you can cut the tops off if they are too high.
For a well-fitted boot, opt for a model that's available in several calf sizes. You could even choose a lace-up model so that the fit around your calf is as good as possible. They also come with elasticated parts of varying widths so that they hug the shape of your leg.
