The ankle, also called the instep, is the joint connecting the leg to the foot. It allows you to carry out flexion, extension and very slight lateral movements. It is a fragile joint that is very heavily used on a daily basis and during sport. It is important to take good care of it since the ankle supports the weight of the body.
What is an ankle brace?
An ankle brace is a joint support that provides, according to its type, a degree of compression around your ankle. It is truly a preventative and protective piece of equipment for your joint. Ankle braces can: be recommended for stabilizing the joint, increasing vigilance, and/or limiting the risk of sprains.
Along with the compression it provides, a good ankle brace should be comfortable: feel free to chose those made of a perspiration wicking knit such as the Aptonia ankle braces.
However, before making your choice, we recommend you to consult a doctor.
Preventative (or proprioceptive) ankle braces
With a preventative role, proprioceptive ankle braces are designed to provide the compression required to support your joint. This compression provides better awareness of your ankle in space because it places your brain on alert. The ankle support allows you to do your sport comfortably and safely. Preventative ankle braces are used when returning to exercise after an injury or in the case of chronic ankle weakness.
Flexible ankle braces
With a stabilization role, flexible ankle braces support and guide proper ankle movement. It is often accompanied by elastic bands that allow you to adjust the ankle brace based on your desired level of support. The joint is supported more effectively for your athletic activity. This ankle brace limits the risk of sprains.
For ankle support using a tightening system, we recommend the Aptonia MID500 ankle brace.
How to choose the right size ankle brace
To find out your ankle size, find a soft tape measure, place it around your ankle 5 cm above the malleolus* and measure the circumference. Measurements are included between:
20 – 22 cm: choose size 1
22 – 23.5 cm: choose size 2
23.5 – 25 cm: choose size 3
25 – 26.5 cm: choose size 4
* You might think you don’t know what the malleolus is, but you already know: it’s the little bump on your ankle 😉
