With the onset of monsoon, Little Grebe breeding season starts as they are water birds and prefer small pockets of water bodies to raise their offspring. I was on a stroll to nearby hills where I heard the call of the chicks and noticed three chicks with the mother. They are very skittish, especially around human settlements so I just observed them from distance and left after a while.
I had experience with the species and they are very shy esp. when young ones are around. To capture their behavior, I set up a hide and started visiting every day in the morning before sunrise. Usually, mother used to take them around the water to feed them and it was a treat to see how they communicate. I spent 10 days and almost saw them growing, but one fine day suddenly two of them started some nasty fight possibly one snatched the food from mom’s beak. It was such a treat to see their behavior and mother Grebe trying her best to shut them up. It went for almost 15 min, after all, they are not so different than us.
